Quarterback Tyrod Taylor has bounced around the league the past few seasons with the hopes of holding down a starting job. After being signed by Los Angeles last offseason, the opportunity arose this season. However, the worst case scenario occurred after just one start.
Prior to the Week 2 matchup with the Chiefs, a team doctor accidentally punctured Taylor’s lung while trying to administer a painkilling injection. It forced the team to throw rookie Justin Herbert into the action, where he shined in each of his three starts.
Coach Anthony Lynn said that Taylor would return to being the starter, but he ultimately chose to roll with the hot hand, announcing Herbert as the starter the rest of the way out Thursday.
It was unfortunate news to Taylor, as he has now lost his starting job three times in his professional career.
“He did not take it well because he wants to lead this team. But he is a pro. He’s one of the better pros I’ve been around. He will support Justin like he’s been doing. He’s still the captain of this football team,” Lynn said.
Taylor’s reaction comes as no surprise. Prior to joining the Bolts, Taylor lost his starting job while with the Bills to Nathan Peterman and Browns to Baker Mayfield. Now, he loses it to the 22-year old Herbert
Lynn said Taylor will be the backup when he returns from injury. The 31-year old signal-caller is set to hit the free agency market after this season.

Los Angeles Chargers’ rookie quarterback Justin Herbert will start for the second week in a row after sources say veteran Tyrod Taylor suffered a punctured lung when being treated by the team doctor ahead of Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Sources told ESPN on Wednesday that Taylor was unexpectedly ruled out last week after a Chargers’ doctor punctured his lung while trying to administer a pain-killing injection to his cracked ribs.
Taylor has been advised not to play “indefinitely,” which comes as a surprise just days after head coach Anthony Lynn reaffirmed his position as starting quarterback.
'He was our starter for a reason, and if he's 100 percent, ready to go, he's our starter. But I know that Justin can pick up the slack if he can't,” Lynn said Monday.
The NFLPA also announced Wednesday that it would be investigating the incident.
“Our medical and legal team have been in touch with Tyrod and his agent since Sunday collecting facts,” NFLPA assistant executive director of external affairs George Atallah said in a tweet.
